As a 25 year resident of Beaufort NC, I have spent many days at the Cape, watching (from a distance in my skiff) the wild Shackleford Banks horses grazing in the marshes, walking the beaches and even swimming across a cut. The first time I ever saw these horses swimming, I did not realize they could in fact, swim. For such a large animal, they are quite graceful swimmers, even when the tides and currents are side to them. For me, this is always a special site. This painting is special as it is a rare scene.
